Transgender Woman That Was Detained In Canada Soon To Return Home To The UK

A transgender British comedian, Avery Edison, was being temporarily detained in Milton, Ontario’s detention facility, Maplehurst Correctional Institute, over an immigration issue. Edison was detained in this male only facility for four days after being arrested by the border officials of the Pearson International Airport in Toronto. The officials arrested her after they denied her entry to the country because she had stayed in Canada longer than permitted with a student visa the last time she had visited.

Even though Edison carried proper identification, a passport, that identified her as a FEMALE, she was still transported to the men’s facility because she had male genitalia. Edison was finally transported Tuesday afternoon to, Vanier Centre, a female only correctional facility, after the news was made public on the internet.

Canadian Border Services have no comment on the situation for the time being. Avery’s partner, Romy Sugden, tweeted that even though the event took it’s toll on Edison, she stayed strong the whole time, and is expected to fly home to the United Kingdom sometime on Thursday, February 13, 2013. Sugden also stated that there has not currently been any notice that Edison will be unable to visit Canada in the future.
