Messy Divorces: Charles Saatchi and Wife Nigella Lawson

Up until this summer, art collector Charles Saatchi was admired by many. That stems from the success and high-respect that art endows those skilled in that highly selective market. Saatchi seemed to enjoy a good marriage to Nigella Lawson with whom he had been married to since 2003. Lawson is his third wife and perhaps his charm.

The vision of a dream life ended with a dinner date turned ugly in June when Saatchi was seen putting his hands on his wife’s throat. Police cited him with “caution” which likely displayed deference to his stature and wealth as nearly any other man would have been taken away in handcuffs.

The couple are now estranged. Saatchi himself is seventy years old and Lawson is fifty-three. She has moved out of the residence and refused her husband’s plea that she speak to his good name and affirm that he has never been physically abusive to her.

Saatchi says that he had his hands around his wife’s neck in what he described as a “playful tiff”. The couple had been discussing the subject of their children at the time of the incident. Perhaps it was as innocent as he claims. Perhaps Lawson is posturing for a better divorce settlement. Time will tell.
