UK spies to be allowed to speed
Under UK motoring laws to be unveiled this week, operatives from British spy agencies MI5 and MI6 (the latter being of James Bond fame) will be able to ignore speed limits, zebra crossings, road markings, and eve red lights as long as they can verify that the violations were a matter of national emergency.
It is not clear just how operatives would justify their behavior and to whom would they do it. Obviously, a matter of national emergency will likely be classified and not something which would be disclosed to a constable. Quite likely, the agencies will simply have to be taken at their word. The proposed changes give them the same exemptions to traffic laws that are used by emergency services.
In addition, the new Road Safety Act will require that MI5 & MI6 drivers undergo a high-speed driving course and be subject to the same checks as ambulance drivers, fire fighters, and police officers. The changes are designed to improve national security and save lives. It is also expected that drivers for vehicles carrying mountain rescue teams, bomb disposal units, transplant organs, or bearing markings from the UK Border Agency or HRMC will also be covered by the new changes.
