US Report Accuses Canadian Crab & Loberster Fisheries of Brining Right Whales to Extinction
Now, a well-funded American environmentalist group known as the Natural Resources Defense Council has issued a report accusing Canadian lobster and crab fisheries of carrying out an extinction level event against the Atlantic Right Whale.
The Right Whale is a special type of Baleen whale that is edentulous (IE toothless).
The Right whale is already on the endangered species list, but owing to what the environmental group calls “negligence” on the part of the Canadian fisheries, the whale now faces extinction.
So what is the cure? The environmental group is attempting to stage a US boycott of Canadian crabs and lobsters until specific measures are taken to protect Right whales. Currently, the United States has stricter laws in place governing fishing practices that have reduced the number of whales accidentally maimed or killed in incidents called “bycatch” accidents.
Since 1994, the number of bycatch injuries has dropped by 30%. The group would like to see Canada adopt similar measures and is content with inflicting financial harm to their fishing industry until their demands are met.
