Local Volunteer Firefighter Arrives on Scene of His Daughter’s Fatal Car Wreck

Brookline, New Hampshire – Steve Whitcomb’s day job is that of a plumber in this small southern New Hampshire town of less than 5,000 residents. The 58-year-old man enjoyed a unique life experience in that he worked in his chosen profession alongside his 30-year-old daughter Katie Hamilton who lived nearby with her three children. Whitcomb also regularly donated time as a volunteer firefighter.

On Christmas Eve, he responded to a call regarding a horrific car crash and arrived on the scene to discover one of the victims he was helping retrieve was his very own daughter Katie who only had moments left to live. According to police, 31-year-old Greg Cullen rear ended Mrs. Hamilton’s Ford Explorer SUV as she was making a left turn.

Hamilton had been either stopped or was slowing down to turn left, reports the Nashua Telegraph, when Cullen’s Toyota pickup smashed into her.

‘At the last minute – we don’t know if it was driver distraction or what the cause was, we haven’t been able to determine that,’ Brookline Police Chief Quigley said.

‘He swerved to avoid hitting her and still struck her on the very right rear corner of her vehicle, forcing her to come over to the northbound lane.’

The impact thrust her vehicle into oncoming traffic where 37-year-old James Ciprott crashed his Ford F-250 head on into Hamilton’s car causing her fatal injuries.

Police have concluded the horrific incident was an accident. Neither driver was impaired by any substance that could potentially have contributed to the accident. However, for Mr. Whitcomb, he has lost his beloved daughter, the mother of his grandchildren, and his professional partner. The intersection of routes 13 & 30 were the point of the accident.

On Christmas Day, Katie Hamilton’s grieving husband, Liam, woke up their three little girls.

‘I tried to make it normal,’ he told the Boston Globe.

However, the couple’s youngest daughter, a 2-year-old, appeared confused and asked where their mommy was.

‘Mommy died,’ her 4-year-old sister replied.
