Singer Wayne Newton was luckily not on board his yacht when the 65-foot boat sank recently on Lake Mead, about an hour’s drive east of Las Vegas. The vessel was tied to a marina slip when it sank, stern first, in more than 40 feet of water. According to Newton’s sister-in-law, the singer and his wife were on an international holiday and not in the country when the sinking occurred, which is being investigated by local law officials. But Newton’s sister-in-law did confirm that the Rendezvous is owned by the singer.

Lake Mead officials said the boat was partially submerged with a portion jutting out of the 45-foot deep water. No one was aboard at the time, and no injuries were reported, Vanover said. McCrone said Newton, known as “Mr. Las Vegas,” and his wife were vacationing out of the country when the boat sank.

Officials from the National Park Service report that they will investigate for any signs that foul play was involved in sinking the yacht which will require the efforts of a salvage crew to raise out of the lake water later this week. The investigation thus far points to some type of equipment failure as the likely cause of the boat going under. Newton purchased the yacht, which was decorated by his wife Kathleen, at least five years ago and family members said he used it every weekend. The ruined yacht is the latest in a string of bad luck for 71-year old Newton, who recently lost his home after a legal battle.
