Colombia’s most obese baby Santiago Mendoz (pictured with therapist Salvador Palacios) – who weighs the same as a six-year-old child – has been ‘rescued’ by a charity so he can undergo life-saving treatment
Santiago Mendoza is an eight-month-old child who weighs in at nearly 44 pounds (3.1 stone or 19.69 kg), the average weight of a boy six years old. Recently, the boy’s health issues grew so out of hand that his mother, Eunice Fandiño, looked to charitable organizations to help her son with his immense weight. Santiago’s excessive poundage is the result of misguided parenting; his mother claims that she simply fed the boy every time he would cry. She also explained that her son’s obesity had rendered her captive in her own home; he was too heavy to carry around.
Santiago has since been flown out from his home of Valledupar to Bogota, Colombia’s capital city, for emergency care and as an effort to “rescue” him from his mother’s misguided attention. Medellin-based charity Gorditos de Corazon, or “Chubby Hearts,” volunteered to look after the child after his mother wrote letters for help.
Santiago has already had prior instances of necessary hospitalization, all from his weight. Salvador González, director of Gorditos de Corazon, has stated that Santiago will be seen by specialists at the Colina Clinic.

With such excessive weight on his frame, Santiago is at an elevated risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, and severe joint problems down the road. Colina’s physicians will work to lower Santiago’s weight to a tolerable level before considering surgical procedures. Surgeon Cesar Guevar stated that the boy will require education, healthy food, long-term care, and physical exercise when he is old enough.
Likely, what he will need is a long-term treatment, education, healthy food, and when he is older physical activity,’ surgeon Cesar Ernesto Guevar told El Espectador.
‘Otherwise, in the future, he could suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure and severe problems with his joints,’ he added.
When asked about her feelings regarding Gorditos de Corazon stepping in to help Santiago, Eunice said that she was optimistic about the situation and promised to obey whatever instructions she receives for properly raising Santiago.
While Santiago weighs nearly 44 pounds, the average eight-month-old boy weighs closer to 18-20 pounds.
