Yard Sale $3 Bowl Brings $2.2 Million at Auction
Some yard sale finds are more profitable than others. A yard sale browser in New York State purchased a ceramic bowl for the bargain price of $3 in 2007. When their curiosity about the bowl’s history got the better of the new owner, they had it assessed and were dumbfounded to discover that what they had purchased was a Chinese piece of history more than 1,000 years old. Experts at Sotheby’s in New York City determined that the pottery was actually a “Ding” bowl dating from the Northern Song Dynasty.
Although they estimated its value at no more than $300,000, the bowl recently brought a high bid of $2.2 million at auction. The only other bowl that matches the size and decoration of the yard sale find is on exhibit in London at the British Museum since the 1950s.
The identity of the now much richer yard sale customer has not been revealed.
