Birthplace of Golden Retrievers Celebrates with 222 Retrievers

Here in the Scottish Highlands just 30 miles outside of Inverness lies the Guisachan House which is where Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks lived during the 1800s.

Marjoribanks is the first person to breed the dogs known as golden retrievers. Last month, a celebration was held there for this special breed of dogs.

There were 222 golden retrievers who participated in the festival.

Activities at the celebration ranged from a dog show, tug-of-war, and hurling competitions.

The event was sponsored by the Golden Retrievers of Scotland. Since Marjoribanks first bred the dogs, they have very common household family dogs due to their gentle disposition. In the United States, they are the third most commonly bred family dog.

GRCS committee member and organizer, Mr. Jim Richardson said, “The last three months of planning were a bit manic, but it was all worthwhile. I had a PA system and I was shouting at the owners “Get out! Get out of the photo!” He added, “Of course, everybody knows their own dog, and your eyes are glued to it the whole time”. There were fans in attendance from as far as Hawaii.

Similarly, they are the eighth most popular dog in the United Kingdom and fifth overall in Australia. Breeds of golden retrievers differ by geographical region. In the United States, the breed is thinner and not as muscular as they are in the United Kingdom.

Golden retrievers were bred to fetch waterfowl without doing damage to the body. The retrievers are known for their water-resistant pelt and smooth, gentle yet powerful walk or gait.

Golden retriever clubs worldwide exist to promote breeding of the dogs according to a strict code of ethics.
