Live Maggots Found In Box Of Chocolate From Tesco
Stunned Shoppers Find Live Maggots in Tesco Chocolate Box
Customers shopping at a Tesco store soon lost their appetite for sweets after two teenagers discovered live maggots had invaded a box of popular brand-name chocolates.
John Downs was reaching for a bag of Cadbury Caramel Nibbles when he felt as though the caramel filling was dripping from inside the bag. He was shocked to find out that what he was feeling on his hand were slimy, slithering live maggots who were already feasting on the candy.
Mr Downs, who was buying treats with his friend Braden Little ahead of a trip to the theatre, said: ‘I didn’t realise what it was at first – I thought it was caramel leaking out of the packet.
‘I felt something move and saw the maggots on my hand and my clothes. It was disgusting.
‘It absolutely stank of fungus,’ Mr Downs added.
‘A lady shopping in the same aisle told me to go and wash my hands straight away.’
When word of the infestation spread throughout the store in Sunderland, many shoppers abandoned their trolleys full of food and simply walked out.
In addition to looking quite horrible, the nest of maggots also smelled really bad, causing Downs to admit that he wouldn’t be shopping for chocolates or any other groceries again at Tesco in the near future. Downs and his fellow student shopper reported the incident to the customer service desk located inside the store, but felt frustrated that store management didn’t take their complaints very seriously.
Although Tesco promised to investigate what may have caused a box of chocolates to become infested with maggots, neither Downs nor his shopping companion, another teenager, has received any explanation. Downs’ mother followed up with a phone call and was offered store vouchers.
