911 Operator Laughs During Emergency Call

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating why their 911 dispatchers can be heard laughing during an emergency call. Lalo Delgado reports that his faith in 911 is shaken after his plea for help was met with laughter.

Delgado called 911 seeking assistance because his girlfriend and his car were on fire. During the 911 recording, which has now gone viral, laughter can be heard from 911 dispatchers immediately after Delgado answers, “no” to the operator’s question, “Is your girlfriend still on fire?” Delgado assumed the 911 dispatcher was laughing at his situation, which prompted him to exclaim, “It’s hilarious huh?” The 911 operator informed Delgado that her laughter “wasn’t regarding that”.

The Arizona law enforcement agency admits that the dispatcher’s behavior was unprofessional. Department Captain Jim Berry told reporters that he can understand why Delgado is upset, but stresses the fact that this is an isolated incident and most importantly, the 911 response time was not affected.

The dispatcher who took the call had no prior incidents on her record and is allowed to continue taking calls until the investigation is complete. Lalo Delgado’s girlfriend is still recovering from being on fire.
