Accidental Racist Spoof On SNL
This weekend’s edition of Saturday Night Live, hosted by VinceVaughn, who returns after a 15 year break from hosting the sketch comedy show, featured, among other events ridiculed in the media, a weekend update response to the release of LL Cool J and Brad Paisley’s new song, “Accidental Racist”.
The country/rap song has taken many hits in the press since its debut. The criticisms range from: too controversial, or insensitive; to being hastily put together to promote the upcoming release of LL Cool J’s next album. The sound of LL Cool J’s voice is definitely not record studio quality, and as many have pointed out, it sounds like two completely different songs awkwardly spliced together.
During the SNL spoof on the event, Seth Myers introduces, Jason Sudeikis as Brad Paisly, and Keenen Thompson as LL Cool J. The duo feign excitement about the new single and claim that, “it cured racism.” They end the skit with a rendition of “Accidental Racist”, playing on common racial stereotypes to highlight how unsophisticated the Paisly/ Cool J effort was.
The skit proved to be a good example of SNL’s courageous attitude to cover controversial issues in a comedic light, and mock them.
