Valuable Whisky Mistakenly Flushed Down Drain

Faces are red with embarassment at a bottling plant for Chivas Whiskey in Scotland after it was discovered that almost 18,000 litres of perfectly good Scotch whiskey were flushed down a drain by workers during the night shift.

The wasted whiskey has been valued at nearly half a million pounds. Officials at the plant have launched an investigation into the costly accident which is thought to have occured when workers mistakenly thought that they were emptying waste water into the local sewer lines after equipment had undergone routine maintenance and cleaning but it turned out that the liquid that escaped down the drain was in fact drinkable Scotch whiskey which should have instead been bottled for marketing by Chivas Brothers.

Plant officials were quick to alert local authorities that none of the liquor had been dumped into the local river.

The company has released a statement saying: “We are currently investigating an accidental loss on the 26th of February at our Dumbarton site, where some spirit was released to the local water treatment plant.

A spokesman for Scottish Water has also said, “Staff at our waste water treatment works were already aware of a problem and were working to identify the source when contacted by Chivas Brothers.

“Our trade effluent team have now visited the company to get an oversight into its failure investigation so that we can ensure all possible precautions are being taken to prevent a repeat.

“Discharging large volumes of alcohol into the sewer network can have an adverse impact on waste water treatment processes, particularly during dry, cold weather.

“We are continuing to closely monitor our Dumbarton waste water treatment works to ensure treatment has not been compromised.”

There is no word if Chivas plans on firing any of the workers involved.
