Amazon Builds A Camperforce For The Holidays

Published

 on

Every year Amazon recruits what it calls a ‘camperforce’ to help meet its distribution needs. Like most companies, Amazons busiest season is the holiday season, but in warehouses in Nevada, Kentucky, and Kansas they have problems finding extra workers because the communities the warehouses are located nearby are modest.

Their solution is to recruit those who drive RVs inviting them to hitch their RV into the campgrounds near the warehouse and work for hours every week for three months. The company regularly attracts empty nesters, retirees, and younger parents that are free to roam from job to job by camping out wherever they can find temporary work. While it might sound crazy, plenty of people show up for three months of solid work.

Amazon has been hiring the Camperforce in Fernley, Nevada, Coffeeyville, Kansas, and Campbellsville, KY since 2010 and it seems the arrangement is working out for all of the seasonal workers that show up in their RVs.

Last year the peak day for Amazon was Nov. 26th when Amazon customers ordered about 306 items per second. All of those orders need to be packed and mailed and that is where 70,000 extra seasonal workers will come into play.
