Baby Born on Freezing Sidewalk Survives

Published

 on

A newborn baby girl was born on a freezing Toronto, Canada sidewalk was pronounced dead. The twenty-year-old mother was on her way to the hospital because she wasn’t feeling when she suddenly went into labor and gave birth on the sidewalk. The child and mother were then transported to Humber River Hospital where there were attempts to resuscitate the infant both in the ambulance and at the hospital; when it appeared that all attempts had failed the baby girl was then declared dead.

The infant was covered in a sheet and two police officers on the scene noticed movement, upon investigation a pulse was found and the child was confirmed alive. Credit has been given to the two officers for saving the baby’s life and a review of the care the infant received by medical personnel is under review.

The baby girl was transported to the Hospital for Sick Children where she was determined to be in stable condition. It is thought that the new born may have had hypothermia which mimics death by causing abnormally low body temperature, weak pulse and slow breathing.

The temperature in Toronto that day was extremely cold and the city had been on alert because of the freezing temperatures, the night before the temperature had dropped to a staggering -5F.
