DJ Paul Gambaccini64-year old DJ Paul Gambaccini, a veteran broadcaster on the BBC, was arrested by Scotland Yard regarding past sexual offences committed against minors as part of a larger police investigation following revelations regarding sexual predator Jimmy Savile. In connection with Operation Yewtree being conducted by Scotland Yard, Gambaccini was questioned at his home about historical sexual acts he may have been involved in with children, but Gambaccini has publicly proclaimed his innocence. He has been granted bail until mid January.

Gambaccini has voluntarily decided to suspend his broadcasts over BBC2 until he can clear his name in court. Police officials admitted that the veteran DJ was fully forthcoming in answering their questions when they visited his South London residence. Police also stated that he was totally cooperative with their investigation but denied participating in any actions that could be considered criminal behavior.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “We don’t give a running commentary on investigations and we don’t confirm names [of arrestees before charge].” “He answered their questions and was co-operative. He denied all allegations.”

Gambaccini was bailed until January and has pulled out of his Saturday radio show. Earlier, human rights activists described a police decision not to name the arrested Gambaccini as “chilling”.

Gambaccini is the latest in a line of well-known British celebrities and media personalities who have been questioned in connection with allegations uncovered in the Jimmy Savile child sexual abuse scandal. In recent months, Operation Yewtree has targeted comedian Jim Davidson, former BBC DJ Dave Lee Travis, and publicist Max Gifford regarding historic allegations of sexual misbehavior involving minors.
