 on

YouTube Awards ShowThe first YouTube Awards show took place on Sunday, November 3 at Manhattan’s Pier 36. The show was broadcast live on YouTube. The televised event was also unscripted, creating an “anything goes” night to remember.

Awards were presented to a number of mainstream recording artists as well as appearance by up and coming YouTube stars. Eminem was presented with Artist of the Year award. Pentatonix, along with dubstep violinist Lindsy Stirling received an award for Response of the Year. Taylor Swift won the award for YouTube Phenomenon, but was not on hand to accept the award. Cimorelli, a musical group of sisters, accepted the on Swift’s behalf.

Win Butler, of Arcade Fire fame, boldly interrupted Cimorelli delivering their acceptance speech, interjecting that the YouTube Phenomenon winner should have been Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” video. Lady Gaga and Eminem were reportedly on hand and delivered flawless performances. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis received an award for the category of “YouTube Breakthrough” while pop performs Girl Generation received the “Video of the Year” award.

The show, streamed live, was not seamless. Technical difficulties froze the live stream, leaving viewers temporarily in the dark. Each time the feed stopped, a Kia commercial was played prior to restarting the live stream. The show featured unscripted speeches and outbursts, such as that delivered by Win Butler.

The first ever Youtube Awards show lasted approximately 90 minutes and was hosted by Jason Schwartzman and Reggie Watts.
