Cancer Claims Guitarist Benjamin Curtis at 35

Benjamin Curtis, the 35-year old guitarist for Secret Machines, succumbed to lymphatic cancer on December 29. When news of his death was leaked to the news media prematurely, members of his School of Seven Bells band decided to officially confirm the sad news on their own Facebook page, noting that they had wanted to delay an announcement until his family could prepare themselves for the onslaught of condolences messages. The Facebook post also extended heartfelt gratitude to the many people who supported Curtis’ musical performances throughout the years and supported the benefit performances scheduled in the New York City area since his cancer diagnosis was announced.

The diagnosis of lymphatic cancer was made less than 12 months ago for Curtis, who was a co-founder of the School of Seven Bells band. Paired with vocalist Alejandra Deheza, he released three different albums, the final of which premiered in 2012 called Ghostory. He cut his musical teeth as a member of the Secret Machines as well as the Tripping Daisy rock group prior to forming his own duo with Deheza six years ago. Fellow musicians said they were comforted by the fact that although Curtis’ physical presence is gone, his music will live forever.
