Blackberry BBM to Soon Be Available on Android Gingerbread OS

Blackberry smartphones may have fallen well behind their Apple iPhone, Android Smartphone, and Windows Phones competitors, but that doesn’t mean the cellphone maker can’t compete. It is true that when the long awaited Blackberry Z10 was released almost a year ago, it came at a time when Blackberry had fallen so far behind its rivals that all their major product release did was catch up with a subset of features already in existence.

However, the company is looking to regain relevance by expanding their base not only through new smartphone sales, but also through use of their popular messaging software Blackberry Messenger (BBM). The company has now announced that a version of BBM will be available for version 2.1 of Android better known as the Gingerbread version. While that may look like nothing more than a big whoopee from the once vaunted Canadian smartphone maker, it turns out that in the developing world Android Gingerbread still has a large presence. In fact, it is used by 21% of existing smartphones. By making their application backwards compatible, they allow themselves to tap into a huge base of existing users. It increases the likelihood those same users will continue to use BBM as they progress to modern versions of the popular smartphone OS.
