Forgetful Groom’s Bomb Hoax Prevents His Own Wedding
Bride-to-be Amy William’s wedding day was put to a halt for a reason that few women can imagine. When Amy, family, and friends arrived at the well-known Grade II venue at St. George’s Hall, the building was rampant with police. The police had hurriedly arrived at the venue after receiving a bomb threat from a payphone. However, the bomb threat came from and unexpected and shocking source.
Neil McArdle (36), of Kirby in Merseyside, had made the anonymous phone call to the Liverpool Register Office, declaring to the receptionist: “This is not a hoax call. There is a bomb in St. George’s Hall and it will go off in 45 minutes.” Once the police traced the call to a payphone near McArdle’s house, McArdle admitted that the call was a hoax. McArdle had made the call because he had failed to book the venue and had forgotten to file the forms to legalize the marriage.
Unfortunately for Amy Williams, Neil McArdle was sentenced by a Judge Norman Wright to 12 months in jail and was also ordered to pay £100 court costs. Judge Wright had justified his sentencing, stating that the bomb hoax “must have shook sheer terror in the heart.”
