Brittney Griner Comes Out

Brittney Griner, of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) made the announcement that she is a lesbian. The 22-year-old was chosen as the no. 1 overall draft pick and will be playing for the Phoenix Mercury in the 17th season of the WNBA which starts May 5. Griner has finished her NCAA career at Baylor University with a staggering 3,283 total points and 748 time shot blocker that broke both the men’s and women’s records.

Griner made the public announcement that she was a lesbian stating that she hopes that making her decision to be openly gay will help the younger generation of the GLBT community to be more comfortable with who they are. Her parents did not know at the time of the announcement but have always told Brittney to be who you are.

Griner has also spoken about being bullied about her sexuality and height while growing up and wants to address these problems and work with kids experiencing what she went through as a child. Griner stated in the LA Times “Don’t worry about what other people are going to say, because they’re always going to say something, but, if you’re just true to yourself, let that shine through. Don’t hide who you really are.”
