Father Calls 911 After Children Get Buried Alive in Pit

What began as Joseph Arwood’s protective bunker to safeguard his family has now become the cause of their death. 911 operators received a frantic call from Arwood Sunday night reporting that the dirt walls in the 24 foot deep pit had dug fell on his daughter and her cousin.

As CBS reports, Arwood’s desperate voice is heard on a recording released by the Lincoln County communications center on Monday, when the children’s bodies were recovered.

Little Chloe Jade Arwood, 6, and James Levi Caldwell, 7, went into the pit to retrieve a small pickaxe when the walls of the would-be bunker collapsed in on them without warning.

Desperate for help, Arwood called 911 operators begging them to come with a bulldozer, crane, or anything that could be used to rescue them.

“Please hurry … My children are buried under tons of dirt … They’re buried under tons of clay … It fell on top of them,” he said sobbing.

When the dispatcher asked him if he could see the children, Arwood said he couldn’t.

“The entire wall collapsed on them. Get a crane. Get a bulldozer. Get anything you can, please,” he said. “There’s no way they can breathe.”

During the converstation with the dispatcher, Arwood start to to pray for the children.

“Lord lift this dirt up off these children … so the children will be alive and well … I have to get my kids. Lord, please,” he said.

Sadly, it wasn’t until Monday that the bodies of the children were retrieved.

Arwood had been using a backhoe to dig out a pit for a protective bunker. The enclosure was 20’x20′ and 24′ deep.

However, the pit lacked any reinforcements needed to prevent the walls from collapsing. Recent showers likely contributed to the instability of the dirt walls.

On the tape, Arwood said he didn’t know what happened.

“They were inside the hole helping to get something and the wall collapsed,” he said.

A neighbor told the press that he was concerned about the stability of the walls given the lack of a support structure. He had even told his teenage daughter who babysat the victims to stay out of the pit, Sheriff David Carpenter said.

“They were so distraught we hope to be able to talk to them today and come up with some information on that,” Carpenter said. “It’s a very large hole. It would look to be something like that, but I don’t know. … We’re going to find out exactly what his intentions were.”He said deputies would be speaking with county planning and zoning officials about any potential building code violations at the site.

FOX News reports Arwood is a felon who is not allowed to have guns. He was convicted in 2003 for possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell.
