bus goes off bridge montenegro leaves 13 Dead
Saturday, June 22, 2013, approximately 46 people boarded a tourist bus to travel from Romania to Montenegro’s Adriatic Coast.
The bus took a winding road through the Moraca Canyon during a storm and plunged 40 meters off of a bridge over the Moraca River. Reports from officials indicate that at least 13 people were killed, with some sources saying as many as 16 people have died and at least 30 people have been injured.
Another source states that at least 7 are currently fighting for their lives in critical condition. The majority of the victims are from Romania though there is news that one victim was a child standing on the bridge.
This road is notorious for traffic accidents with its narrow width and slippery road conditions during rain. Rescue operations were difficult due to the dangerous topography of the ravine and local authorities used helicopters to help rescue the victims.
The Interior Minister, Rasko Konjevic, has called this an “extremely serious accident,” and the Romanian Ambassador to Montenegro, Mihail Florovici, has named this a “huge tragedy,” after visiting the victims who are being treated in the capital, Podgorica, 30 km north of the Maraca River.
