Carly Rae Jepsen Provides Worst First Pitch For Tampa Bay Rays

On sunday July 14, 2013, famous one-hit-wonder, Carly Rae Jepsen, provided a laughable attempt at a first pitch for the Tampa Bay Rays game against the Houston Astros.

Famous for her hit single, “Call Me Maybe,” Jepsen gave her number to the Rays, but I doubt they’ll be calling her anytime soon with sunday night’s performance. The video of the pitch has already gone viral, as many internet users find pleasure in the singer/songwriter’s ultimate onscreen failure.

Jepsen dressed in the number 8 jersey for the occasion and took the mound to deliver the ceremonial first pitch. As she went to release the ball, Jepsen miscalculated the time of release, subsequently sending the trajectory of the ball straight towards the first base line.

This came almost as a surprise since Jepsen had pitched perfectly at a Baltimore Orioles game this past april. Many are speculating as to what could have gone wrong, but it seems to be just a minor error in calculation. For if she was that consistent at throwing strikes, she probably would be in different profession altogether.

After the pitch, Jepsen handled the situation by jokingly raising her hands in the air and laughing it off.

She has since posted pictures on Instagram of the incident and added an image of Moore (whom she refers to as a catcher) giving her a “sympathy hug.”

A before and after. Me taking the mound. Me knocking the camera out of the photographers hands with the baseball. And me getting a sympathy hug from the catcher. Omg.

Jepsen further showed her sense of humour about the incident in another tweet.

“So apparently I made ESPN with my fail of a pitch,” she wrote. “Lol- Daddy must be so proud.”

As for the pitch’s place in history, many are comparing this pitch with some of the worst ceremonial first pitches ever thrown.

Curiously, this wasn’t Jepsen’s first-ever first pitch. In April, Jepsen threw a strike to the plate in a game between the Baltimore Orioles and Minnesota Twins.

After all, every celebrity won’t come through like South Korean rhythmic gymnast Shin Soo-ji, whose acrobatic first pitch at a Korean League game made her an internet celebrity earlier this month.

Instead, celebrity first-pitches are more likely to turn out like Mariah Carey’s, which bounced most of the way to home plate.

Or like Canadian heartthrob Justin Beiber’s, which sailed high and outside the strike zone before a 2010 game in Chicago.

Even a background in sports doesn’t help some celebs. Three years ago the crew at ESPN’s Pardon the Interruption celebrated U.S. sprint star Carl Lewis’ birthday by reminding viewers how miserably he had failed in his attempt to throw out a first pitch at a Seattle Mariners game.

But to his credit, Lewis learned a valuable lesson:

If you can’t pitch, find a more reliable way to deliver the ball to home plate.
