Cat In A Jar: Student charged with Animal Cruelty

A Taiwanese college student has been charged with animal cruelty after posting pictures of her punishment for a misbehaving cat to Facebook. Kiki Lin, an English major at the Taichung Providence University posted pictures of her large white cat crammed into a glass jar, which left the cat no room to move and seemingly no way of breathing.

The scandal began when the pictures of the cat, Kiki surfaced on Facebook, with the owner showing no remorse for her actions as Facebook users began to comment on the pictures. As many Facebook users posted comments stating they thought the punishment was cruel and unfair, Kiki Lin struck back claiming those criticizing her had too much time on their hands. In a later interview with a local Taiwanese newspaper the owner still maintained the punishment was not cruel and she did not understand why the images had become such as large issue.

Fortunately, for animal lovers the Taichung Animal Protection and Health Inspection Office took a different view, charging Kiki Lin under the regions animal protection laws. Under the strict animal protection cruelty laws of the region a guilty verdict could lead to a large fine and up to one year in prison.
