Couple Sells Daughter To Buy New iPhone
Prosecutors in Shanghai have charged a couple with human trafficking after the couple attempted to sell their daughter online. Authorities were alerted after the couple posted an advertisement offering their infant daughter for the sum of between 30,000 and 50,000 yuan.
The couple was arrested after authorities were alerted to the online postings that the couple had used to arrange for the illegal adoption of their daughter. She was the couple’s third child. The parents of the little girl used the proceeds to purchase a new iPhone, sports shoes, and more items online.
One of the child’s parents told investigators that they were not selling the child to benefit from the money that was made, but instead to secure a better future for their daughter.
iPhones are much sought after items in China, and the shocking means to which people will go to in order to secure own one are not new to news headlines. In 2012, a teenager sold one of his kidneys and used the funds to purchase an iPhone and other Apple brand electronics.
Police authorities have not disclosed the names of the parents or the exact amount for which the baby was sold.
