Daughter Evicting 91-Year-Old Father: Granddaughter Steps In To Help (PHOTO)
Not everyone is lucky to have children that love them, but few are unlucky enough to have daughters like Janice Cottrill, the Ohio woman who intends to evict her 91-year-old father from the house he built and has lived in for more than 50 years.
The story began in 2004 when John Potter and his late wife gave power of attorney to their daughter Janice Cottrill. They figured it might be useful if either one of them had failing health and were unable to make medical or financial decisions for themselves.
According to the Inquisitr:
The intent was to make it easier for her to care for her 63-year-old brother, who has an autism spectrum disorder. However, a general power of attorney allows the individual to make a wide range of financial decisions — and Cottrill decided to deed Potter’s home to herself.
Cottrill, however, illegally used the power of attorney she held to transfer the deeds of the house into her own name. In 2010, when John Potter discovered what his daughter had done, he transferred the power of attorney to his granddaughter, Jaclyn Fraley.
After a court case in which Potter then sued his daughter to get his house back, an appeals court ruled in Cottrill’s favor for no more reason than the ‘statute of limitations’ on the ‘fraud’ charge had expired. The house Janice Cottrill had illegally taken from her father now legally belonged to her.
Cottrill then filed an eviction notice against her father saying his “existing lease” had come to an end. A “lease” that she said was on the home the 91-year-old man had built himself more than 50 years ago.
The story, however, doesn’t end here. Potter’s grandaughter, Jaclyn Fraley, has waded into the fray and, after cutting ties with her mother as she doesn’t agree with what she is doing, Fraley has set up a crowd-funding campaign on GoFundMe.com. She’s asking for people to help “Save Grandpa’s Home” by donating small amounts of money. Her ultimate goal is $125,000 and, with that, she says she can buy back the house her mother stole.
As of this writing, that goal has already been reached and money is still coming in. After all, John Potter’s daughter may not care about what happens to her father, but apparently many other people around the world do.
She posted this comment Thursday morning:
“I just woke up to our goal being reached! Dreams really only do come true when you wake up! I can’t wait to call Grandpa later this morning and share the news.”
Jaclyn Fraley put together a Q&Q with grandpas and posted it on youtube.
