Mom Rescues Baby from Subway Tracks

A mother was quick to the rescue at a West Philadelphia commuter train station when her 14 month-old child’s stroller accidentally rolled and toppled onto the tracks five feet below.

The accident occurred on the Marker-Frankford Line at the 56th Street station, the stroller wheels were unlocked and rolled forward where the platform is slightly slanted for drainage purposes.

The mother, 28 year-old, Temeka Greer did not hesitate to jump down onto the tracks to save her baby, ABC News reported.

The third track at the station is electrified; fortunately Greer was not in contact with it as she rescued the child. The mother handed her up to people on the platform and then was aided herself in coming up the five foot wall and back onto the platform

While Greer was saving her child, a fellow commuter pressed the emergency call box to alert officials. Trains run through the station every eight minutes and the next one was just a minute away.

The child’s mother was not charged by police, Busch said.
Busch commended Greer’s fellow passengers for rushing to her aid. He said one of the Good Samaritans pressed a button on the station’s callbox, alerting personnel to the emergency. They immediately stopped train traffic, Andrew Busch, a spokesman for SEPTA, told ABCNews.com this evening.

“It’s a great story of people helping out someone in distress, the way the other passengers reacted and particularly the one who had the presence of mind to press the call button and help us get train traffic stopped so that nothing more serious happened,” he said.

The little girl was treated for cuts and bruises and will have no problems recovering from the wounds; upon investigation the mother will not be charged as it appears to have been an accident as she forgot to lock the stroller wheels.

According to 10News.Com, trains run about every eight minutes at that time of day. While there was no train on the immediate approach, Greer said there was a train at the station preceding the 56th Street stop.

“It’s heart-wrenching because you can anticipate it, because the stroller does start to move at a very slow rate of speed and it kind of builds up,” said SEPTA System Safety Director Scott Sauer said in an interview with ABC News TV affiliate WPVI in Philadelphia . “You want to tell someone to grab the stroller.”

The did not fall out of the stroller when the stroller fell.
