The Associated Press lost a valuable member of their photography team when Dave Martin passed away after collapsing at the Chick-fil-A Bowl. The respected journalist was documenting Texas A&M’s narrow 52-48 victory against Duke at the Georgia Dome when tragedy struck.
As the game came to a conclusion, Martin rushed onto the field to take pictures of Kevin Sumlin’s celebratory water bucket drenching. At this time, the photographer started suffering symptoms of an apparent heart attack. He continued snapping photos as he fell to the ground, and CPR was quickly administered; however, the efforts were to no avail. He was confirmed deceased at Emory Hospital Midtown on January 1st.
Martin’s rich career spans over 30 years. Iconic pictures attributed to his name include famous shots of Hurricane Katrina and the Gulf oil spill. He was a mere 59 years old at the time of his passing. Since joining AP in 1983, he has been stationed around Montgomery, Alabama. This base allowed him to document countless significant moments in the modern history of the American South. Furthermore, his work took him overseas to chronicle Olympics, politics and war.
The esteemed visual storyteller is survived by his wife and two kids .
