Carolina Reaper Peppers Certified as World’s Hottest

Rock Hill, South Carolina – It’s official! When it comes to hot peppers Guinness Book of World Records has certified the Carolina Reaper peppers as the world’s hottest peppers. These bright red Satanic nuggets are grown by local farmer Ed Currie who persevered through four years of effort to prove that his peppers are worthy of the title of hottest pepper on earth.

So just how hot are they? They have been certified to pack a wallop just below that of police pepper spray. Given that bit of information, it is a wonder why anyone would want to eat a dish containing them. Nevertheless, students from nearby Winthrop University were on hand to taste-test certify the peppers. Believe it or not, the taste test is an undergraduate requirement. Given the potency of the pepper, you’d think tasting it would be a hazing requirement for pledges to Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

Paul Bosland, director of the Chile Pepper Institute at New Mexico State University, told the AP the heat of the pepper depends on the plant’s genetics, as well as where it is grown.

He also added “the heat is more about being macho than seasoning.”

“You have to think of chili heat like salt. A little bit improves the flavor, but a lot ruins it,” Bosland said.

Regardless, the symptoms a person can expect to feel include being scarlet-faced, doused in sweat, and struggling to keep from regurgitating. At the risk of being too real, it should be noted that something this hot will also induce a similar discomfort upon exiting the other human orifice. A peppers heat rating is measured in Scoville Heat Units. Your garden variety jalapeno pepper scores a 5,000 rating. A batch of the Caroline Reaper peppers hit 1,569,300 and a single pepper surpassed 2,200,000.

Here’s a video of two brave souls trying the Carolina reaper!
