Taiwanese New Year’s Rubber Duck Explodes Again

Keelung, Taiwan – A New Year’s Day celebration ended with disappointment in this major harbor town in Northern Taiwan today. The 18 meter (~59 feet) yellow rubber ducky exploded into a ball of fire before spectators. Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman had designed the float to be a large replica of the ubiquitous bathtub toy. It went on display 11 days ago and initially exploded.

Event organizers believed the situation was resolved only to witness the rubber duck explode once more. They have vowed to determine what is causing the replica to be so combustive. It was a near perfect day for a New Year’s Day celebration as the sky was partly cloudy. The surprise pyrotechnic duck went off like a bomb at 12:00PM local time.

Speaking before a group of reports, event organizer Huang Jing-tai apologized to the rubber duck fans and admitted they do not know what’s been literally setting the duck off. One newspaper reported that someone’s come forward who had a bird’s eye view of the events and claims it was eagles nipping at the duck with their talons that caused the explosion. Last year, bad weather forced rubber duck replicas in three cities to be grounded.
