Florida Dog Accidentally Shoots Owner

A Frostproof, Florida resident driving in his pick-up truck with his dog was accidentally shot when the canine kicked a pistol that was laying on the floor of the vehicle, causing it to discharge a bullet into the man’s leg, reports Gawker.

Gregory Dale Lanier was driving north on State Road 17 and thought that he had already removed any bullets from the firearm. He was startled to suddenly hear a loud noise accompanied by smoke and then feel searing pain in his leg.

Police officials report that no charges or arrests are pending for either Lanier or his clumsy dog since the shooting has been ruled accidental although they are continuing to investigate the incident.

Commander Steve Carr, a police spokesman in the central town of Sebring said the shooting is believed to be just an odd accident.

“It’s what he claims,” Carr said of Lanier’s account. “We didn’t spend a lot of time investigating it. There doesn’t appear to be any criminal act involved. You don’t have to be licensed in Florida to carry a handgun.”

Lanier’s bad luck is a cautionary tale for other gun owners who don’t secure their firearms while riding in a vehicle in addition to not ensuring that their guns are not loaded with bullets when around children or pets.

Not The First time a Canine Got Trigger Happy

In 2007, a Tenn man was in critical condition after his dog shot him in the back.

Police say King George, a 150-pound Great Dane, accidentally knocked a .22-caliber pistol off his owner’s end table. The gun went off, hitting his 21-year-old owner in the back, MyFOXMemphis.com reports.

“I knew he was smart, I didn’t think he was that smart,” the victim’s fiancee, Miesha Lucas told MyFOXMemphis.com. “He was always protective. I didn’t think he would be like that.”

Police refused to name the victim as they do not plan to file charges in the shooting, which they’ve ruled as accidental.
