Child Endangerment Charges Dropped Against “Tanning Mom”

The New Jersey mother who made national headlines when she brought her 5 year old daughter into a tanning salon with her has had pending child endangerment charges against her dropped when a grand jury in Newark failed to indict her.

Nutley, NJ resident 44-year old Patricia Krentcil, who became known as the “Tanning Mom”, was arrested last spring after school officials noticed burn marks on her daughter’s legs and discovered that Krentcil had taken the youngster with her into a tanning booth which is a violation of New Jersey state law that requires children to be at least 14 years of age or older in order to use tanning salon facilities.

“We presented all the available evidence in the case to the grand jury, both the state’s evidence and the defense’s evidence,” said Assistant Essex County Prosecutor Gina Iosim. “The grand jurors voted not to indict Mrs. Krentcil. We respect their decision.”

Krentcil yelled at reporters to get off her property last night when they asked her for a comment about the charges being dropped and would only say that she still likes to go to tanning salons and doesn’t think that tanning is criminal behavior.

“Tanning mom” remained in the headlines last year when she was kicked out of several night clubs for being drunk.

Patricia and her family acknowledge the problems that have come with instant notoriety and say she is seeking help.

“My wife and I are making her health and wellness a priority, and along with [the book] ‘The Skin Regime,’ she is taking every step to prioritize getting help to make positive steps forward in coping with the pressure of the microscope that she is under,” Richard Krentcil, her husband, told me.
