Elijah Woods Horror Film Banned In New Zealand (VIDEO)
Elijah Wood’s Horror Flick “Maniac” Banned in New Zealand
The latest film from the young but venerable actor Elijah Woods entitled “Maniac” will not run in movie theaters or in homes via DVD if the ruling by the Office of Film and Literature Classification stands. The organization concluded that the first person aspect of murders committed by Wood’s character Frank Zito.
In the film, Zito is a psychopath serial killer who scalps his female victims. With the exception of scenes were Wood’s character is experiencing moments of reflection, the film is made entirely in the first person.
Technically, this type of film is called a “Point of View” film or POV. The film has already been released in some foreign markets where it has grossed a total of $2.5 million on a budget of $6 million. The ban on the film does not prevent the film from being aired at the New Zealand International Film Festival.
The distributor plans to run the film while the appeal process makes its way through the Office of Film and Literature Classification. The film was shown at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival but in a time slot which did not allow it to be considered for an award. Reviews for this film are mixed.
