Dad Kills 10-Year Old Son While Cleaning Gun

Christopher Stanlane, a 34 year old father in North Carolina, avoided the conventional wisdom of avoiding having any children or pets in the area while cleaning firearms.

Stanlane had his 10-year old son in the living room of their home last Sunday when he began cleaning the shotgun he had cradled on his lap. While the man was wiping down the weapon with a cleaning cloth, it accidentally fired, shooting a bullet into the head of his 10-year old son, Chris,Jr., who was sitting and enjoying watching a television program when the accident occurred.

Paramedics were immediately called in a frantic attempt to save the child, who was sitting on the floor in front of his father while he was cleaning his shotgun. Unfortunately, medical personnel were not able to save Christopher,Jr., who was struck at point-blank range in the head and he was declared dead at the Stanlane’s home.

‘He was careful with it,’ Robert Simmons, the boy’s uncle, told Carolinalive.com. ‘I don’t think he meant to hold it in that direction. There must have been a bullet lodged in the chamber and it fired and hit him.’

Although sheriff’s deputies are continuing to investigate the deadly tragedy, no charges have been filed against the elder Stanlane.

Simmons said the parents are in shock, trying to come to terms with what happened.

‘She’s hanging in there, she’s not as best as she could be right now because she lost her son,’ he said. ‘And the dad, he’s in shock, don’t really know what’s happened right now.’
Simmons said little Christopher would be sorely missed by the family.

‘He was a good little boy. He was my little buddy. More than words could ever say to describe how we will miss him, it’s just an unbelievable tragedy.’

In 2012, a man’s handgun went off as he was getting into his truck at a western Pennsylvania gun store, and the shot tragically killed his 7-year-old son, authorities said.

Joseph V. Loughrey, 44, of Sharpsville, was holding the gun while when the 9 mm handgun discharged, hitting his child Craig Allen Loughrey in the chest, according to state police.

The boy died at the scene at Twigs Reloading Den in East Lackawannock Township, 60 miles north of Pittsburgh.

According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report, there were a total of 561 children under the age of 12 in 2012 killed by firearms, many of them accidentally by playing with guns themselves or in accidental shootings by others.
