Racist Actions May Have Set off Stabbing

Galatasaray’s stars Didier Drogba and Emmanuel Eboue were subject to some racist abuse during the pairs 2-1 loss to Fenerbahce on May 12 when a Fenerbahce fan pointed a banana at them. The abuse, which was also experienced by former Fenerbahce star Roberto Carlos while he was playing in Russia, has reopened the debate of racism in football. However, this was not the shocking news that caught everyone’s attention Sunday night.

Shortly after Turkey’s most famous sporting derby a Fenerbahce fan was stabbed to death and more than 100 fans were detained late on Sunday night.

The Fenerbahce fan was stabbed to death by two Galatasaray fans after a derby between the two rivals on Sunday May 12 in Istanbul.

Burak Yildirim, who was only twenty, was fatally stabbed while on his way back home from the game late Sunday. The report stated that two people wearing Galatasary clothes stabbed Yildirim in the chest at the Metrobus station in Edirnekapi. Despite all efforts, Yildirim died after being immediately taken to Bezmialem Vakif University Hospital.

Istanbul Police have launched an investigation to capture the assailants who fled the scene after the incident, and they have sanctioned a man hunt for the attackers.
