Born on October 28, 1897, Head made her mark in movie history has the designer of some of the most iconic costumes worn in movies over the course of the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s. Over the course of her career her works were seen in classic hits such as The Birds, Vertigo, and Funny Face, and she won eight Academy Awards, more than any other woman to date. She was nominated for over 40 of them.
In 1938 she became Head Designer for Paramount and her work was featured in most of their major works for decades. She became one of Alfred Hitchcock’s favorite designers, and it is believed that her move from Paramount to Universal in the 60’s was to follow the famed director, who made a similar move several years beforehand.
Her initial dream did not seem to be costume design at all. While attending the University of California her pursuits were linguistic in nature, and she acquired a degree in French and then a masters in romance languages. She decided to take some time working on her art, and during the course of that she was picked up by Paramount.
