South African Man Finds Himself Swimming Next to a Great White Shark

Port Elizabeth, South Africa – Eugene Van Wyngaardt has gone where only a few thrill seekers would dare to go and even then they would do so from the safety of a reinforced shark cage. Van Wyngaardt was swimming off the sandy beaches of Port Elizabeth when he found himself within feet of a great white shark.

The encounter was unexpected and was caught on video. The fear in Van Wyngaardt is palpable during the brief time the shark swam up close to him. On the third pass, the man eater drew so close to him at which him he prodded it away using his spear gun. This time the shark passed away long enough for Van Wyngaardt to swim to his boat and get the hell out of the water.

That didn’t end the encounter.

The shark circled the boat in predatory fashion. Van Wyngaardt had to be certain to have enough time to reach the boat some thirty feet away because the swimming motion would be certain to draw the attention of the shark.

Van Wyngaardt stated that what provoked the greatest fear in him was the shark being up close to his face. Needless to say, despite his fear, his collective reasoning may well have saved his life.
