Greyhound bus driver attacked by passengers
A hallucinating passenger who attacked a Greyhound bus driver at approximately 1:45am on Thursday, January 16, has left many wondering about whether or not bus drivers need stronger security mechanisms in place while they are on duty. The bus carrying 41 passengers, originally departed from Los Angeles, and was headed eastbound along Interstate 10, in close proximity to Tonopah, Arizona, when 25-year old Maquel Donyel Morris, began to violently attack the bus driver.
Witnesses say that Morris was hitting the bus driver in the face, and they could hear the bus driver screaming for help. “He jumped on the bus driver and he said, “I’m going to flip this bus,” Gregory Fort, a passenger on the bus said. Passengers collectively sprung into action to subdue Morris, and attempt to bring the bus to a halt.
The bus did cross over the highway median, but stopped before entering oncoming traffic. Morris and another passenger that has been identified as his girlfriend, exited the bus, and ran into the desert immediately after the crash, but returned to the scene approximately 30 minutes later, and the pair was arrested.
Morris is currently facing three counts of aggravated assault, 24 counts of assault, and 48 counts of felony endangerment. More charges levied against Morris could be coming. Alexandra Pedrini, a spokeswoman for Greyhound stated that there were 26 passengers injured, and that Greyhound plans to conduct an independent internal investigation into the incident in addition to the police investigation.
A similar accident involving a Greyhound bus occurred in Casa Grande in 2001. That bus, which also originated in Los Angeles, rolled onto its side after a male passenger allegedly grabbed the steering wheel from the driver. The wreck left 33 people injured.
