Internet Geek Buys Up Odd-Numbered Seats for Valentines Day Movie

A computer geek who is pining away for this ex-girlfriend who broke up with him last year looks poised to pull off an odd tribute of sorts to his single-status: occupy a theater’s every other seat with like-minded single people. In doing so, they will force every couple wanting to take in the evening viewing of “Beijing Love Story” at the Xintiandi city mall to sit apart. Talk about sour grapes.

It is reminiscent of that scene from the 2002 blockbuster “Signs” where the character Uncle Merrill Hess explains to his young niece why computer geeks are behind the creation of the crop circles when he said they were made by guys who can’t get girlfriends.

Initially, the computer geek, who goes by the handle “Up”, tried to purchase the tickets for the special Valentine’s Day showing online, but was unable to. The theater ticket office would not allow him to purchase so many tickets either. Finally, he was able to rally other friends behind the cause as a “singles” event. Being single has taking on a special status in China in recent years. The annual sales event called “Singles Day” creates billions in sales annually. “Up” says this stunt is just a gag and is in good fun. Maybe if he put this much effort into wooing a girl, he might be enjoying better company tonight.
