“Cory was a beautiful soul.” says Jane Lynch in Memoriam.

Jane Lynch, who plays the merciless character Sue Sylvester on the hit show Glee, payed a heartbreaking tribute to Cory Monteith at the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards last night. Monteith, who played football star turned glee singer Finn Hudson on the show, died on July 13th, 2013 from an accidental alcohol and drug overdose in a hotel room at the Fairmont Pacific Rim, which is in Vancouver, Canada.

“Tonight we remember Cory for all he was and mourn the loss of all he could’ve been,” Jane spoke during the tribute, also adding that Monteith’s death is “a tragic reminder of the rapacious, senseless destruction that is brought on by addiction.”

The tribute didn’t happen without controversy, however. Many felt that Monteith, who was young and known mostly for one role instead of a body of work, didn’t deserve to be singled out over others who died in the past year, such as Jack Klugman (starring in 12 Angry Men and The Odd Couple) or Larry Hagman (best known as J. R. Ewing in the TV series Dallas).

Several other late television celebrities were honored at the Emmy’s, including Jean Stapleton, James Gandolfini, and Jonathan Winters.
