Jody Putnam kicked off police force for shooting squirrel

Local Police Officer Fired for Shooting a Squirrel Mountain City, TN – Officer Jody Putnam, a veteran officer of more than twenty years, has been fired by the town’s Mayor and Alderman following his refusal to write up a report about discharging his sidearm inside the town’s Dollar General.

There isn’t much that goes on in this sleepy town of just under 2,400 residents and it is likely that his report would make for good reading. On Friday, September 27, Putnam responded to a call in place of the animal control officer. The call was for an errant squirrel inside the Dollar General.

Putnam was unable to trap the squirrel and took to firing mace and pepper spray at the rodent, but the only ones driven out of the store were the patrons and employees who came out gasping for breath and in dire need of a nose wipe.

If that wasn’t all, Putnam fired more than one shot at the critter until he was finally able to take it down. However, it isn’t known whether he struck it with a bullet or simply acquainted it with the bottom side of his boot. Dollar General will not release the surveillance tape of the incident which would likely go viral if it ever made its way on the internet.

“There was a lot of people that come out and just like me they came out and they were coughing and a hacking,” Carl Duffield told WJHL-TV. “It was comical, but I’m sure they didn’t feel that way – the customers that came out.”
