Century of Bigfoot Sightings Mapped

Sightings of bigfoot and similar mystery hominids have been cropping up all over the United States and Canada for decades. A recent project by Josh Stevens mapped out all 3,313 reported sightings over the past ninety-two years and created a rather interesting visual depiction. Stevens is a Pennslyvania State doctoral candidate and want to look at sightings and how they relate to population trends.

The map ended up revealing a very uneven distribution of sightings with little to no relationship to population as well as some notable fluctuations in reports that perhaps relate to bigfoot films and the media. Stevens himself remains skeptical about undiscovered ape-like creatures around the world, but believes it should at least be considered because Jane Goodall believes in bigfoot.

“Right away, you can see that sightings are not evenly distributed,” Stevens said on his website. “There are distinct regions where sightings are incredibly common, despite a very sparse population. On the other hand, in some of the most densely populated areas, Sasquatch sightings are exceedingly rare. The terrain and habitat likely play a major role in the distribution of reports.”

If looking for bigfoot your best chance of sighting one appear to be in the Ohio River Valley, central Florida or the Pacific northwest.

Stevens writes:

Even if bigfoot wasn’t lurking nearby, it might be hard to tell when surrounded by rugged terrain and dense forest. Was that a stick cracking naturally or is a giant primate creeping around? The desire to find, or think you saw, bigfoot might be especially high if you’ve heard tales of giant, ape-like creatures calling the place you’re in home.

Stevens used data that has been compiled over the years by the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization or BFRO. The group believes in the presence of an unknown North American primate with a very low population that is spotted and called by numerous names from bigfoot to sasquatch to the skunk ape.
