Lunch Angel Pays Overdue Accounts for Hungry School Kids

Kenny Thompson felt upset when he found out that children attending the Valley Oaks Elementary School in Houston who had overdue lunch accounts were served a sparse cheese sandwich lunch rather than a full, hot meal. But he decided to do something about this outrageous behavior on the part of the school district. He went to his bank and took out $465 from his personal account in order to bring the lunch accounts of more than 60 elementary school students up to date.

Thompson reports that he first heard about the practice when children were denied a full lunch at an elementary school in Utah, where cafeteria workers humiliated and shamed students whose parents failed to pay their lunch bills.

So he contacted officials at the Valley Oak school to see if the same type of situation existed there and was surprised to discover that many students faced eating a cold lunch that was much smaller in size than those who could afford to pay the full cost of their lunches.

Thompson said it proved to be an eye-opener to discover that many of the children’s parents are so bad off they cannot afford to pay $2.00 a week.

“It was the best money I ever spent,” Thompson, 52, told TODAY.com. “It was the best gift I ever gave myself. I went into my car and screamed.”

“It was horrifying, it broke my heart,” he said. “These are elementary kids. They’re not bankers, and not responsible for the financial issues in the household.”

Thomson tells TODAY, he’s already “targeted” another school with students he’d like to help out.

“It’s going to happen real soon,” he said.
