Scarlett Johansson and Kate Winslet are the latest A-listers to show their true skin. The actresses are featured in Vanity Fair‘s annual Hollywood Issue, photographed makeup-free by famed painter and photographer, Chuck Close.
Normally, photographs of the stars without makeup is a type of photograph that paparazzi snag for tabloid sites to pick up on or news reels to spin. However, in an edition of the popular magazine Vanity Fair, it is an actual photo spread.
The photographs were taken by award-winning photographer Chuck Close. But make-up isn’t the only thing he makes his celebrities go without.
So who would participate in such a potentially humbling experience? Quite likely, people confident of their own natural beauty. So it should surprise no one that actresses Scarlett Johansson and Kate Winslet should appear in the spread.
For Johansson’s part, the lovely 29-year-old displays one of the reasons for her star power and it is raw beauty. Her photograph has hear wearing a light grey sweat top and simple pendant. Her face is makeup free and a bit shiny in the light which is possibly from natural skin oil. Her blond hair is free flowing and untouched by the graceful hands and treatments of a skilled hairdresser. Yet, her trademark smile and big eyes boast a simple beauty that is endearing.
For Winslet, the 38-year-old Academy Award winning actress is seen in a serious pose. Her blond hair pulled back and her facial skins shows signs of aging. However, it is unmistakable that she is the famous actress. Her beauty is not a fabrication of makeup. The two were among a total of 20 stars appearing makeupless in the magazine’s Hollywood Edition.
In Vanity Fair’s “Up Close and Personal” video, Close says, “I don’t do glamour shots, and they’re not airbrushed or whatever. So they can be, um… they can be rough. So I need to talk people through it.
“They have to give up a great deal of vanity in order to do it. And it takes a real act of generosity and faith on the part of the subject to go with it and to give me their image without having any control over what’s gonna happen.”
