Indiana Man Miraculously Survives Being Hit By Train

At approximately 11:45 am Friday 22 year old Darryle Jacob See was hit by a Chicago bound Amtrak in Michigan City, Indiana during a morning job. See survived the impact after being hit head on and thrown 50 feet.

Aside from having no memory of the event the Indiana native has not received any life threatening injuries suffering only minor fractures to his pelvis, neck, ribs and vertebrae, reports ABC News.

He was conscious and able to speak to police when they arrived on scene.

“The conductor said it was a straight on hit,” said LaPorte County police Maj. John Boyd.

Boyd told the New York Daily News that during his 20-year career he has never heard of anyone living after such a full-impact by a train.

“It was absolutely amazing. I’ve seen a number of people get hit by trains, and it’s never a good thing,” he said.

The driver of the train reportedly spotted See and was able to slow the train down to 110 mph while simultaneously attempting to gain his attention by sounding the train’s horn. Despite efforts the collision was unavoidable as See did not notice the oncoming train. ABC NEWS reports that See told police he was listening to music and wearing headphones at the time of impact.

An explanation of his shocking survival is not yet clear. The conductor assuming the worse called in the incident as a “fatal pedestrian strike.” Police Chief John Boyd was unable to contain his surprise at See’s survival stating that ”He was conscious and alert, sitting up and talking to us. I never would have guessed he was the victim.”

He is currently recovering at Memorial Hospital in Southbend, Indiana.

Speaking to NWI Times, Helen Hugley said her grandson was at a hospital in South Bend on Saturday with ”one or two” fractures in his pelvis and non-life threatening injuries to his neck.

”That’s about it, as far as I know so far. He’s going to make it,” said Hugley, who said See was scheduled for surgery Sunday

A spokesman for Amtrak declined to comment on the accident to ABCNews.com
