The Montreal Power Line Fireball

After a huge wind storm knocked out power in Lachine, a suburb of Montreal, a terrifying fireball was caught on video by a homeowner. A damaged transformer was humming and buzzing when the fireball bursts from it and moves down the power line. The utility company believes the phenomenon was caused by some safety switch failures coupled with a lightning strike during the storm which resulted in a surge in power.

The video was filmed by Huw Griffiths. He was home with his family and after the storm he saw a strange light outside. He actually missed the first fireball that passed by, but he was ready to record the second one that came his way with the camera on his cell phone. The fireball moves at a fairly leisurely pace down the power line and it can be seen burning the electrical cables as it goes. The fireball explodes at the end as does the transformer.

The Telegraph reported that the storm occurred last week. It caused thousands to lose power and wind speeds were recorded at sixty-two miles per hour. It also knocked down a number of trees as well as some traffic lights. Luckily, no serious injuries were reported by anyone.
