Morgan Freeman Appears in India Billboard Meant to Feature Nelson Mandela

Coimbatore, India – A billboard ad written in native Tamil was meant to promote prominent civil rights icons of the 20th Century such as Dr. Martin Luther King and Mother Theresa of Calcutta, featured someone who advertisers in this metropolis of one million people thought was Nelson Mandela. Well, if the advertisement had been for the movie “Invictus”, they would have been correct. The ad prominently featured US actor Morgan Freeman who portrayed Mandela in the afore mentioned 2009 film.

Needless to say, the billboard’s owner is blushing red with embarrassment. However, in all fairness, it wasn’t his ad. A cloth designer from the Southern Indian city of Chennai sponsored the ad to give homage to human rights figures. The designer made the fateful decision of assigning the art work to a designer who sadly was a bit ignorant of current events.

However, the billboard’s owner has plenty of company in his gaffe. Social network well-wishers have posted tribute pictures of Nelson Mandela following his death and unwittingly used Morgan Freeman’s photograph. India has taken Mandela’s message of hope and equality to heart and declared five days of national mourning following his death on December 5. India has been struggling to emerge from centuries of institutional racism & bigotry ensconced in their religion via the caste system.
