New Van Gogh Painting Discovered From 1888
Van Gogh ‘Sunset at Montmajour’ Discovered
A landscape painting titled ‘Sunset at Montmajour’ by Vincent van Gogh has been found. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam announced the amazing discovery on Monday, September 9. It is the first major discovery of its kind for the museum and it has been over 120 years since the artist’s death. Van Gogh committed suicide at the age of thirty-seven after years of suffering from mental illness and is famous for painting a number of self portraits as well as ‘Starry Night,’ ‘Irises’ and ‘Sunflowers.’The newly found, large landscape was painted in 1888, a mere two years before his death. Many believe that time period to be when his art reached its greatest state. He painted the picture around the same time that he painted another of his famous works ‘Sunflowers.’ The painting depicting Arles has been attributed to the artist only after extensive research and will go on display at the museum beginning on September 24.
Van Gogh received very little recognition during his lifetime and is now viewed as being one of history’s greatest artist and being far ahead of his time. His artwork is now famous around the world and hanging in some of the most notable museums.
