NRA unveils School Shield Plan
Under a heavy security presence the National Rifle Association unveiled it’s National School Shield program designed to keep schools in the U.S. safe. An NRA Task Force set up after the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre revealed a 225 page document, which includes its eight recommendations for improving school safety and keeping children safe at U.S. schools.
Headed by a former Republican politician the NRA Task Force revealed its plan at Washington D.C.’s National Press Club with Task Force leader Asa Hutchinson guarded by ten armed security guards; the reason for the heavy security presence was not given.
Unlike the U.S. Congress the NRA Task Force did not make any recommendations about increasing gun control. Instead the group focused on arming school staff in an attempt to keep school’s safe should a shooting occur like the Sandy Hook or Columbine massacre’s.
Amongst the other recommendations are the implementation of an online self assessment tool that grades the safety of a school; the Task Force also calls for a greater level of coordination with local law enforcement and a change to state laws, which currently do not allow school staff to carry weapons.
The NRA is opposed to laws due to be discussed by the U.S. Congress such as increased background checks on those purchasing weapons.
